The Save Coffee Boy News Bulletin and Code of Conduct

Current campaign projects:

Send your coffee and letters to:

Private and Confidential - For the Attention of

BBC
Broadcasting House
Portland Place

or email The BBC

  • Valentine's Day Save Ianto Jones/Casimir Effect Fundraiser to raise money for Gareth's new independently funded short-film project, Casimir Effect

  • Donations by SIJ members to Children in Need through Just Giving now total over £13,000.

  • Every month, the Save Ianto Jones campaign clubs together to send a 20 bag batch of Ravens Brew "Resurrection" coffee to the BBC. Each shipment comes from the USA and costs $307 to send. The January Shipment Fund is currently open, and if you would like to donate please do so via PayPal, sending to chryssalys@aol.com.

Any questions about the Resurrection Coffee initiative should be directed via Private Message to [info]chryssalys.

  • Non-UK campaigners have found that sending coffee via UK company Red Monkey Coffee is a cheaper method than sending coffee via Air Mail. The coffee can be ordered through the site and is sent from the UK across the mainland, saving on expensive postage. This is also an option for those with concerns regarding adding money to the Resurrection Coffee Fund.

  • Red Monkey also include a Gift Card option, so members ordering through the site are encouraged to add a message asking for the return of Ianto to Torchwood and an indication of the Save Ianto Jones Campaign with their coffee.

  • Ianto and Torchwood fans continue to leave contributions at the Shrine at Mermaid Quay in Cardiff.

  • The Flat Ianto Project - Ianto fans have been taking photos of their Ianto figurines or cut-outs while on holidays. Ianto's not dead - he's on holiday!

  • The SFX Weekender on 5-6 Feb at Pontins, in Camber Sands! Campaign members will be attending to spread the Ianto and Gareth love!

  • Members with Twitter accounts continue to use the #Ianto tag in their tweets. Follow Save_IantoJones for more updates and tweets.

~*~*~*~

The Save Ianto Jones Campaign was established online in July 2009 following the airing of the BBC mini-series Torchwood: Children of Earth, in which fan-favorite Ianto Jones, played by Gareth David-Lloyd, was killed.

The campaign is lobbying for the return of Ianto Jones with a range of projects aimed at raising the BBC’s and the public’s awareness about the importance of Ianto to the continued integrity of the Torchwood series.

This includes sending coffee to the BBC offices in London, along with postcards, cards and letters outlining their reasons for disagreeing with the killing of Ianto Jones and the subsequent loss of actor Gareth David-Lloyd to the Torchwood cast.

The campaign is also being used as a platform to communicate to Gareth David-Lloyd in the most public way possible how popular he and his character are by publically supporting his other acting and music projects.

Save Ianto Jones Campaign Code of Conduct

Who we are

-We are a group of dedicated Torchwood fans who disagree with the the creative decision to kill Ianto Jones and are campaigning to return the character, as portrayed by Gareth David-Lloyd, to the series.

-We are individuals. We represent countries around the world. We are male and female. We are gay, straight, and bisexual. We are young and old. We are students and professionals. We have different opinions, likes, and dislikes. We express ourselves in many ways.

What we do

-We campaign peacefully for the return of Ianto Jones to Torchwood.

-We support Children in Need.

-We send short, polite letters and emails to the BBC asking for the return of Ianto Jones.

-We send coffee to the BBC as a symbol of Ianto's "Coffee Boy" status.

-We use Twitter to connect with other fans from around the world.

-We organize and coordinate events and maintenance at the memorial at Mermaid Quay, and we absolutely appreciate the involvement and support of the staff there.

-We support the endeavors of Gareth David-Lloyd and the other actors outside the realm of Torchwood, including Casimir Effect, Blue Gillespie, and panto theater.

-We strive to present ourselves in a polite and professional manner, both online and in person, when representing this campaign.

-We encourage tolerance for different or opposing viewpoints. We may not agree with them, however we urge our campaign members to "agree to disagree".

What we DO NOT do

-We neither condone nor tolerate threats, harassment, or abuse towards anyone, be they Torchwood cast, crew, or writers, BBC staff, or other members of fandom.

-We do not require or pressure our members to engage in "boycotting" of any kind, be it merchandise, further television series, conventions, or other projects of Torchwood cast and crew.

-We do not encourage cheating. We believe that we have enough legitimate support that we do not need to engage in "rigging" polls or surveys in our favour.

-We do not encourage "flame wars" or "trolling". We understand that not everyone agrees with us, nor that everyone in this campaign shares the same opinions or motivations, however we do not tolerate unprovoked attacking of any viewpoint.

-We do not demand, threaten, or bribe the BBC for anything. We understand that all decisions are ultimately theirs to make.

Anyone partaking in the above four points is not part of this campaign. They are probably one of the trolls that have been going around claiming to be one of us, flaming people's blogs, journals and the comment sections of other websites.

PLAN OF ACTION

Guys, I can not voice how happy and proud [info]eternalwings and I are for the quick, enthusiastic and determined response we have received from you all. The inspiration and ideas have been electric, the energy positive and hopeful, the spirit filled with the unadulterated passion that only a truly excellent TV show and performance can bring.

I think, first off, it's really important to thank you all. We are the force, Ianto-fans! And by God, are we a force to be reckoned with. Together our voices will deafen, and all other destroying-the-456-related-analogies thereof. We truly have the power to do something here, as fans before us have made critical action in the past.

We are strong, we are together, and most of all, we are respectful. While RTD has essentially shat all over his own creation, he is, in the end, the creator - without him we would have never had Ianto in the first place. And while all I can hope to do is keep the bright flame of indignant, grieving anger burning strong within us all, let's try not to get ourselves arrested in his honour. And let's not blame those who don't have anything at all to do with the loss of our beloved coffee boy - James Moran, for instance. The idea is to win the staff over, to show them that Ianto has a dedicated audience, and to prove to Gareth that he was BEYOND valued and loved by so many hundreds of people. Not turn them against us, not make them angry, but communicate and share our love with them in the hopes of making a difference.

This is sci-fi, friends. Anything can happen.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Send coffee directly

Sachets, packets, crates, jars, cans, beans, granules, envelopes. Grab a handful from Starbucks or McDonalds. Order them wholesale, tip out your Mum's Nescafe canister, anything. Just get it, and send it. Make sure it's well-packaged and safe (try not to send glass!!) and not likely to explode all over a poor Royal Mail office worker and his minimum wage mitts. But send it. As a statement. Because let's face it, this is how Ianto would want it to be.

Send letters/notes/print-outs

If you don't want to send coffee directly, find pictures! Print them out, cut them up, stick 'em together, draw them, paint them, doodle them. Pictures of glorious coffee EVERYWHERE. Shove them in an envelope or stick them to a postcard and send those in, too!

If you're writing a note, make sure coffee is involved. If you click HERE you will even find a CUSTOM SAVECOFFEEBOY LETTERHEAD to make it known you're a part of the community!

Get creative with your post

Ianto would be the first to tell you that coffee isn't just about the coffee. It's about the experience! Therefore send in stirrers, cups, mugs, boxes, Starbucks cards, cup carriers, napkins - anything you can lay your hands on pertaining to coffee and can safely send, do it! Send in craft projects, knitted coffee cups, whatever - let your mind IMPLODE with the awesomeness! And if you get REALLY smart with it send us a picture - we're setting up a gallery to document our efforts!

Our aim is to cause a stir. Blog, vlog, post on Youtube, twitter, facebook, Livejournal, Dreamwidth, EVERYWHERE. Write to newsrooms, local news, magazines, fansites - be LOUD, be PROUD, and be PROFESSIONAL. We need to make sure our voice is respected!

BE COORDINATED

THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT. For maximum effect we need to do this TOGETHER. Therefore please, please, if you can, begin your sending en masse from SATURDAY 18TH JULY. Get the bulk out then, as one, but KEEP SENDING. All through the week, as much as you can, and far beyond! This is for our baby!

And remember to maintain hope. Fan campaigns have worked before. We have seen entire seasons commissioned, and characters saved. We are the audience. We are the power. We are the voice.

We are coming.
